A 2 1/2-year-old El Cajon girl died Friday of head injuries allegedly caused by her mother’s live-in boyfriend, police said.
Gary Stephen Griffith, 34, a self-employed landscaper, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of child abuse. On Friday, police added suspicion of murder to the pending charges. He was being held in County Jail downtown.
The girl, Carla Nelson, died at 3:50 p.m. at Children’s Hospital, authorities said.
Police said the injuries were inflicted Wednesday evening and that the girl’s mother, Debbie Mahan, learned of the injuries hours later.
