‘Homelessness in Suburbia’ and Sheen’s Offer of a Sanctuary

Share

I cannot believe the attitude and total disregard by the many residents of Malibu toward Sheen’s offering of Malibu as a place where the homeless can go and live. Who gives these people the right to express such cold-hearted outrage at such a suggestion concerning those who are not as fortunate? Remember the phrase, “There but for the grace of God go I.”

In Jack London’s book (“The People of the Abyss”), he describes the lives of the homeless in the East End of London at the turn of the century. With the feelings (rather lack of) displayed today, it is no wonder why after one full century and thousands of miles apart, there still is no difference. Maybe never.

These individuals of Malibu who have had good fortune, for whatever reason, are the real people of the abyss. Join the real world. This beautiful coast was not created for you because of your Nautilus body or fat wallet.

Sheen should not even have had to suggested such an offering. But thank God he had the compassion to remember where he came from and where he may have been today.
