A trio of robbers shot and killed two young San Diego men early Sunday morning during a struggle that erupted after the gunmen forced their way into the apartment the pair shared with their families.

Roberto Ocampo Martinez, 23, and Francisco Gonzales, 25, died of gunshot wounds during the 3 a.m. episode inside their Golden Hills home, authorities said.

Police said the confrontation erupted when the men answered a knock at their door and the robbers burst inside, demanding money. Witnesses reported hearing an argument break out in the upstairs apartment. Then, the gunshots rang out.

When officers arrived, they found the bodies of Martinez and Gonzalez sprawled on the living room floor near the front door, authorities said.

Witnesses saw three men described only as Latinos ranging in age from their late teens to mid-20s running from the apartment in the 2000 block of 30th Street, police said.

The victims apparently were from two different families that moved into the apartment a few months ago, officials said. Authorities were uncertain how many family members were home during the shooting, but at least one mother and her two young children were reportedly present when the deadly episode unfolded.
