Five people were arrested on suspicion of drunk-driving in Brea on the first night of the long Memorial Day holiday weekend, police said Saturday.

Brea police screened about 2,000 cars between 6 p.m. and 4 a.m. at a sobriety checkpoint on Carbon Canyon Road, Brea Police Lt. Tom Christian said.

Christian said the five people arrested were released on their own recognizance.

The checkpoint was expected to continue during the evening and early morning hours throughout the 3-day weekend.

The California Highway Patrol was also making a special enforcement effort to keep drunk drivers off the road, but CHP officials in Santa Ana declined to release the numbers of arrests and citations on Orange County freeways.
