Thirteen people were killed and about 1,000 were feared trapped when a network of gold mine tunnels collapsed in the southern Philippines, the military said. The collapse came during heavy rains in the Monkayo region of Mindanao Island, about 600 miles southeast of Manila. The military said rains and faulty timbering caused the slide that engulfed 11 mine tunnels and several workers’ shanties. About 2,000 were reported trapped, but a military spokesman said about 1,000 of those escaped.
