Thunderstorms battered the upper Midwest, flooding streets and basements in southern Michigan and northwest Ohio following an onslaught of heavy rain, hail and tornadoes. Northern Iowa was drenched by thunderstorms, while up to an inch of snow fell in the mountains of western Wyoming, the National Weather Service reported. Lansing, Mich., had more than an inch of rain in 2 1/2 hours, and standing water caused by backed-up sewers stranded cars and trucks, while bridges were washed out in southern Calhoun County. Charlotte, Mich., recorded 4 inches of rain, while Battle Creek had 3, and North Jackson 2 1/2. Streets and basements also were flooded near the Ohio towns of Willoughby and Wickliffe.
