When Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine was named best duo or group and cross-over artists of the year at a Latin music awards gala in Miami on Wednesday, Estefan commented: “In North America we’re considered an Hispanic act and in Latin America we’re an English act and when we go to Europe we’re an act that sings both in English and Spanish. I guess what this means is that this music is universal and it doesn’t matter and it reaches everyone.” Los Bukis, Mexico’s popular band known for highly stylized romantic ballads, swept the Mexican Regional category, Mexican ranchera king Vicente Fernandez was best male artist and Jose Javier Solis was named best new artist. Officially titled “Premio Lo Nuestro a La Musica Latin (Best of Our Own Latin Music Prize),” the awards were sponsored by Billboard magazine and Univision television network and were televised live by the Univision network.
