Five county schools received National Secondary Recognition Awards or Distinguished School Awards, the U.S. Department of Education recently announced.

The awards are based on the general excellence of the schools.

The five are Fullerton, Irvine, Los Alamitos and Mission Viejo high schools and McFadden Intermediate School in Santa Ana.

Nationally, 176 schools earned the recognition awards, including 24 in California. Only one other California county, Santa Clara, had as many award-winning schools as did Orange County.
