Crest
A man who told sheriff’s deputies that he killed his elderly mother after a vision of television evangelist Jerry Falwell ordered him to do so was found guilty Thursday of first-degree murder.
The same jury that deliberated about a day before convicting Ashley Demers, 26, of Crest will return today to determine whether he was insane at the time of the crime.
If Demers is found insane, he will probably spend the rest of his life in a mental hospital for the criminally insane. If he is found sane, he will be sent to state prison for 25 years to life.
In a tape-recorded interview Jan. 2, Demers told deputies he killed Anna Demers, 67, with a heavy rock Nov. 10, 1988, and then buried her near the mobile home they shared.
