Park Users Urged to ‘Learn to Share’
As someone who enjoys the Santa Monica Mountains and Sycamore Canyon, but is not a mountain bicyclist, I was disturbed by the attitude of hiker Rob Webster in your article “Mountain Bikers Patrol Their Own on the Trails” (Times, May 25).
It seems Mr. Webster considers the Santa Monica Mountains State Park his personal area for “peace and solitude” and any other users that do not fit his usage profile infringe on his “ability to enjoy the park.” Because the park is adjacent to a very large and highly populated urban area that includes people with a wide variety of interests, I think Mr. Webster needs to learn how to share with others and not try to ban anyone who may upset him in “his” park.
The article indicates that the off-road bicyclists are (willing) to compromise, but Mr. Webster is intolerant and unwilling to work with others. I propose that if anyone is banned from the park, it be those that are not willing to work and cooperate with everyone that wants to enjoy this beautiful public property.
