P.M. BRIEFING : Uno Warns Nation on Trade Reform
TOKYO — Japanese Prime Minister Sosuke Uno told the Diet (Parliament) today that trade problems with the United States are “becoming more serious every day” and warned his nation to prepare for “some pain and hardship” in rectifying economic practices that Washington says are unfair.
Uno, who succeeded Noboru Takeshita last Friday after Japan’s worst postwar political scandal, made the declaration in his first policy speech to both houses of the legislature but did not specify what action might be taken.
“The various trade and economic issues facing Japan, including those with the United States, are becoming more serious every day,” Uno told Parliament.
“We must therefore embark upon rectifying those institutions and practices which are objectively perceived as unfair.
