Ft. Dix

In response to: “A Dream Fulfilled: Ft. Dix Gets the Boot,” by Jeff Danzinger, Editorial Page, May 20:

Danzinger’s account of Ft. Dix is so rife with cornball prose I thought I was reading Readers Digest. Rusty water, foul-smelling kitchens, drunk sergeants, and my oh my, low crawling in frozen dirt--sounds as though Danzinger would have preferred a penthouse with room service for combat training quarters.

I went through boot camp at Dix in 1964, four years prior to his experience, and recall it as a kick-ass, no-nonsense, you-will-function place, run by combat seasoned professionals. In retrospect I wouldn’t trade that experience for any thing now. Danzinger’s article works better as breezy entertainment, or maybe as a script for yet another silly TV show, but it’s not about boot at Ft. Dix.
