The San Clemente family of Adam Fletcher, a 23-year-old college student studying in Beijing whose whereabouts since the Chinese military crackdown have been uncertain, were relieved Monday night when they spotted him on a network TV news show.
His mother, Janette Fletcher, said she saw her son in a crowd pictured at what appeared to be a hotel. He turned toward the camera and gave a shy smile, she said, adding:
“He looked fine.”
Fletcher is among the 22 students in UC’s Education Abroad program who were evacuated Sunday to hotels outside downtown from dormitories at Beijing University, where troops have massacred several hundred student demonstrators and bystanders, said William H. Alloway, director of the Santa Barbara-based foreign study program.
None was from UC Irvine, he said.
“As far as we know, they’re all OK,” Alloway said. “They are moving about a bit.”
