Missionaries

In response to “Bolivian Leftists Kill 2 Mormon Missionaries,” Part I, May 26: There is so much more to the story than can be told in a few column inches on Page 4. In a century bloodstained by the murder of the innocent, there could not be two people more innocent, less deserving of murder than were Todd Ray Wilson and Jeffrey Brent Ball.

In them was not a shred, not a trace of imperialism. There objective was anything but the imposition of North American ideals. These two young men had left home and everything familiar to them to live for two years among strangers with the sole objective being love for God and fellow man, and trying to spread that love. There could be no finer ambassadors for the United States, for rather than a distant, waving political or business figure, they lived among the people and showed the Bolivian people on a day-to-day basis the goodness, caring, and genuineness of which North Americans are capable.

With this act the Zarate Willka Armed Liberation Front has completely and ignominiously illegitimated and defamed itself, the people of Bolivia have been shamed, and the hopes for feelings of international brotherhood and good will have been tarnished.
