WASHINGTON — The White House said today that a U.S. medical team will go to the Soviet Union to help hundreds of people burned in a gas pipeline explosion that destroyed a trans-Siberian train last week.
Press Secretary Marlin Fitzwater said the 13-member team from Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Tex., were to depart from nearby Andrews Air Force Base late today and “will stay as long as necessary.”
President Bush offered the assistance on Tuesday when he visited the Soviet Embassy in Washington, where he signed a condolence book to the families of the hundreds killed in Saturday’s explosion.
