Graduation ceremonies for the following universities were held Saturday.

Cal State Los Angeles held its 42nd commencement Saturday in the university stadium. Degrees were conferred on more than 2,000 students. Child advocate and president of the Children’s Defense Fund, Marian Wright Edelman, said: “Through your voices, your service for the poor and young, in whatever role you decide to play in life, you can be a flea for justice, and for children in our great nation. Enough fleas biting strategically can make the biggest dog uncomfortable. Only through a massive flea corps for children biting the Congress, biting governors and state legislators, biting business and professional and media leaders will we make it un-American in the 1990s for any child to go hungry, homeless, without decent health and child care to be poor.”

Cal Poly Pomona awarded the 50,000th degree conferred since its founding in 1938 during the school’s 50th anniversary commencement. More than 2,800 students received diplomas at the morning ceremony. Keynote speaker Russell G. Mawby, chairman and chief executive officer of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, received an honorary degree.
