Going to the Zoo--The Santa Ana Zoo is marking National Zoo and Aquarium Month with a gift to visitors. On weekend days in June, the first 100 visitors to the zoo will receive a free hardback copy of anthropologist Shirley Strum’s book “Almost Human,” an account of baboon interaction in Kenya.
National Zoo and Aquarium Month celebrates wildlife conservation and education efforts by U.S. zoos and aquariums. Cooperative breeding programs have made these institutions pivotal in the survival of many endangered species, including such Santa Ana Zoo residents as the golden lion tamarin, lion-tailed macaque, thick-billed parrot and ruffed lemur.
To bolster its education efforts, the Santa Ana Zoo recently installed new animal identification signs and graphics and has created new publications for teachers.
The zoo is at 1801 E. Chestnut Ave. Zoo hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily (closing time will be 6 p.m. July through September). For information, call (714) 836-4000.
