Kentucky is on the right track with its new railway museums and a railway dining train.

Fifty passenger cars and locomotives are parked at the Railway Exposition Co. Museum in Covington. The newest car is a two-level Superdome. The cars are available for charter, and the railway operates excursions in conjunction with Amtrak. Information: (606) 431-1574.

At the Bluegrass Railroad Museum just west of Versailles, visitors can enjoy an 11-mile round-trip ride through the Bluegrass countryside. Railroad prints and Southern Railway artifacts are displayed in the cars.

The category of budget motels in the lodging industry is booming--and cost-conscious travelers are thankful. Business Travel News reports that many more companies are turning to budget motels to house their personnel.

The “1989-90 National Directory of Budget Motels” has updated listings for more than 2,000 motels in the United States, plus increased listings for Canada. Rates range from $18 to $39 a night for a single room, $3 to $5 more for a double.

The directory is available solely from the publisher--Pilot Books, 103 Cooper St., Babylon, N.Y. 11702, for $3.95 a copy, plus $1 for postage and handling.

The highway speed limit in Sweden will be lowered to 55 m.p.h. (90 kilometers per hour) this summer in an effort to save lives and reduce pollution from auto emissions.

But police doubt it will work, claiming it is difficult enough to enforce the current 68 m.p.h. limit. Automobile Assn. officials also are calling the measure too drastic.

The new limit will be in effect from June 22 to Aug. 20, when traffic usually increases by about 30%.

Swedish highways join those of Norway and Ireland as the slowest in Europe. West Germany has no top limit on its autobahns , and most other European countries have a limit of 62 to 74 m.p.h.

The Swedish government’s Traffic Council Agency reported that slower speeds this summer could save between 10 and 20 lives and could result in 100 to 200 fewer injuries.

In recent months road deaths have increased sharply, especially on major highways.

AeroCalifornia, the La Paz-based airline, will begin service from Los Angeles to Baja California on Thursday. The daily flights will serve Loreto, La Paz and Cabo San Lucas.
