P.M. BRIEFING : Sikorsky Plans to Lay Off 10%
STRATFORD, Conn. — Sikorsky Aircraft plans to lay off up to 10% of its 13,000 employees this summer because of cuts in defense spending, executives said today.
Sikorsky spokesman James R. Bowman said the company has asked managers to identify whom they would lay off under a 10% reduction, but said he doubted the cuts would be that high.
Bowman said that the cuts would hit salaried employees first, but that management also is reviewing the unionized hourly work force. About 45% of Sikorsky’s work force is salaried, including engineers, accountants and administrators. Production or hourly wage jobs make up the rest of the helicopter-maker’s work force.
