The Assembly on Monday approved a bill by Assemblyman Richard Katz (D-Sylmar) to prohibit the transmission of unsolicited junk fax advertisements for the sale of property, goods or services. A 43-21 vote sent the bill to the Senate, which has approved similar legislation. “These unwanted junk fax transmissions cost the receiver in hard cash and lost time,” Katz said. “They not only use the paper the owner pays for, but they keep other necessary transmissions from coming in or going out.” The measure would make it an infraction punishable by a $500 fine for each transmission of an unsolicited junk fax advertisement.
