Housing Applicants in Orderly Lineup

With police officers standing by for crowd control, registration for federally subsidized housing in Glendale continued without incident at two city recreation centers Tuesday.
Several officers were stationed at both the Maple Park and Adult Recreation Center sites Tuesday for “preventive measures” after Monday’s registration resulted in pushing and shoving in a crowd of about 800 that caused two people to faint.
The crowd--mostly immigrants from Soviet Armenia--apparently had mistakenly believed that federally subsidized housing was awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. The sign-up, however, was for a waiting list that was to be evaluated later by city officials.
About 3,000 forms were handed out on Monday, and on Tuesday, applicants stood patiently in line to turn in the completed paper work, officials said.
