LOCAL : H.B. Woman Badly Hurt as Fleeing Suspect Rams Car, Causing Blast

A 20-year-old woman was critically injured this morning when a suspect fleeing police in Huntington Beach rear-ended her car, causing the gasoline tank to explode.

Krysten Olson of Huntington Beach was rushed to the UCI Medical Center burn unit with second- and third-degree burns over her body, police said.

Matthew Shergalis, 28, of Newport Beach was booked into Orange County Jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run driving and felony drunk driving.

The incident occurred about 2:30 a.m. when Newport Beach police tried to stop a driver who had run a red light on Pacific Coast Highway at Superior Avenue. The driver sped northbound on Beach Boulevard and collided with Olson’s car near Holland Street, then tried to flee on foot, police said. He was caught at Beach Boulevard and Warner Avenue.
