Maryland Hires Ohio State’s Coach
The University of Maryland hired Gary Williams of Ohio State as basketball coach Tuesday. He replaces Bob Wade, who resigned under pressure May 12.
Williams coached at Ohio State for three years, leading the Buckeyes to two 20-win seasons and a 59-41 record. He took Ohio State to postseason tournaments all three seasons. Williams was coach at American University and Boston College before going to Ohio State. His overall record is 276-169.
Williams, a Maryland graduate, inherits a program that has been in trouble recently. The Terrapins were 9-20 last season and won only one Atlantic Coast Conference game. In March, the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. announced that it was investigating Maryland for recruiting violations.
