Two people were arrested Wednesday at the Salvadoran Consulate during a protest over the detention by Salvadoran government forces of two labor leaders, authorities said.
The arrests occurred after about 40 protesters with the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador and other groups occupied the consulate offices at 1616 Beverly Blvd. in Los Angeles during the morning, Sgt. Alex Salazar and organization members said.
Committee spokesman Mario Rojo said the protest was aimed at alerting the Salvadoran government that the detentions of labor leaders Jose Mazariego and Gregorio Osorio were getting widespread notice by the American public.
When police asked protesters to leave the building, two protesters--Noel Rodriguez, 33, and Martin Van der Veen, 73--”actually insisted on being arrested,” Salazar said.
They were arrested shortly past noon and booked on suspicion of interfering with and delaying an investigation.
