The golf and tennis tournament sponsored by NutraSweet Classic May 8 at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades raised $97,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. James G. Ellis was chair. A grand total of $600,000 was raised for the foundation by the NutraSweet tournaments in Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta, New York and Chicago in April, May and June.

The first KFAC/Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra Radiothon broadcast May 20-2l netted about $85,000 for the orchestra. More than $24,000 was offered in challenge grants by individuals and corporations. The Los Angeles Herald Examiner donated the catalogue, the Beverly Center provided the site and Bullock’s assisted with promotion.

The 43rd annual Tennis and Crumpet Classic June 3 at the Playboy Mansion West netted $100,000 for the John Tracy Clinic, a nonprofit educational facility for preschool hearing-impaired children and their families. The event was sponsored by the clinic’s Women’s Auxiliary. Mel Torme was honorary chair.

The San Marino Area Auxiliary of Five Acres celebrated its 25th year June 3 with a fund-raiser at the estate of Tom and Louise Jones. The event netted an estimated $75,000. All proceeds will benefit the Five Acres Educational Program for abused children. Susan Rhoades, Didi Nowers, Ann Stewart and Mary McCluer were co-chairs.

The American Institute of Wine and Food benefit on June 4 at Union Station netted $1,000 for the Lois Dwan Scholarship Fund. The money will be used for further training of American chefs at schools of their choice.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California held its 30th annual garden party June 4 at the home of Sy and Maxine Gomberg, raising $17,000 for the ACLU. Of that amount, $6,500 came from an editorial arts auction with works donated by Paul Conrad, Bill Schorr and Signe Wilkinson. Proceeds from the event will be used to fund ongoing defense of civil liberties.

Wildwood School’s Circus Fund-Raiser at the Santa Monica Airport June 4 netted an estimated $75,000. Proceeds will be used to support scholarships and programs for economically and ethnically diverse elementary school students.

The Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, which honored Irwin H. Goldenberg with a “Lifetime Achievement Award” at the Century Plaza Hotel on June 7, netted $500,000 for the university’s scholarship fund. Stanley Hirsh was chair.

The American Jewish Committee, Los Angeles Chapter netted more than $125,000 at its dinner June 7 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel. Jane Fonda was honored. Barry Diller, Barry and Anita Hirsch, Ron Meyer, Dawn Steel, Barbara Walters, Merv Adelson, Paula Weinstein and Mark Rosenberg were co-chairs. Proceeds benefit the organization’s work in human rights and combatting bigotry and anti-Semitism.

The 7th annual Los Angeles Girl Scout Council’s fund-raising dinner on June 8 honoring Lilly Lee and Howard White at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel netted more than $140,000. Richard Deihl was honorary dinner chair. Robert LaFerriere and Peggy Moore were co-chairmen.
