Monarch String Quartet to Open Seal Beach Festival

As it has for the past two seasons, the Monarch String Quartet will open the 15th annual Seal Beach Chamber Music Festival.

On June 22, the quartet will play Haydn’s Quartet in D, Opus 76, No. 5, and Brahms’ Quartet in C minor, Opus 51, No. 1. Like all nine concerts in the series, this will be free and will take place at the McGaugh School Auditorium, 1698 Bolsa Ave. at Seal Beach Boulevard, starting at 8 p.m.

A number of other artists from past seasons will return this year:

--June 29: Pianist Mark Sullivan, playing Mozart’s Sonata No. 13 in B-flat, Chopin’s Ballade in F minor and Barcarolle and Ravel’s “La Valse.”

--July 6: Ysaye String Quartet, playing works by Haydn and Dvorak.

--July 13: The Southwest Chamber Music Society, playing Brahms’ Clarinet Trio and Barber’s Cello Sonata.

--July 20: La Stravaganza, a program of Baroque music played on original or replicas of period instruments.

--July 27: Pianist Albert Dominguez, playing Beethoven’s “Les Adieux” Sonata and Stravinsky’s Sonata.

--Aug. 3: Ysaye String Quartet, playing works by Mozart and Beethoven.

--Aug. 10: The Haydn Orchestra (Alan Parker, conductor; Jean Hugo, violin), playing Mozart’s Concerto No. 5 and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8.

--Aug. 17: Young Artists’ Guild, performers and works to be announced.
