June gloom is expected to fade into more sunshine and warmer temperatures this weekend, the National Weather Service said.

A weak cold front heading south will keep the clouds here today. But a building high-pressure system will bring back the sunshine this weekend--after the usual night and morning clouds.

June’s trademark cloudy skies have been more prevalent this year, especially during the first part of the month, with San Diego only recording 28% of possible sunshine. That makes it the gloomiest June in five years, forecaster Wilbur Shigehara said. The June average is 57%.

‘Living Up to Reputation’

“June gloom has struck,” Shigehara said. It’s not too surprising to not get much sun in June. June is living up to its reputation, just more so than usual.”

Shigehara said high-pressure systems should bring more sunshine for the remainder of the month.

“We’re not reverting to the typical summer pattern yet,” he said. “But high pressure will dominate more the rest of the month.”

The summer solstice, which is the longest day of the year and marks the beginning of summer, will be 2:53 a.m. Wednesday.

Beach temperatures will be 63 to 68 degrees today, rising slightly to 67 to 72 through Sunday. Sea breezes are 8 to 12 m.p.h.

The coastal strip will be partly cloudy this afternoon but will have increasing afternoon sunshine through Sunday. The coast will have highs of 66 to 74 today, 70 to 78 Saturday, and might reach 80 degrees Sunday. Overnight lows will fall to 57 to 62 degrees.

Morning clouds should burn off by mid-morning in inland regions and by the afternoon on the coast. Inland valley temperatures could reach mid-80s today, and up to 93 by Sunday. Nightly lows will be 52 to 58.

The mountain and desert regions will remain clear through Saturday, becoming partly cloudy by Sunday, due to clouds coming in from Mexico. There may be thunderstorms early next week.

Mountain highs will top off near 90 by Sunday, falling nightly to 52 to 62 degrees. The deserts will be 103 to 107 today and 105 to 110 through Sunday, with lows ranging from 74 to 80.

The surf is two feet at 12-second intervals; the water is 64 degrees.
