Peters and Helm Sign Major League Contracts
Rex Peters of Cal State Fullerton and Wayne Helm of Pepperdine signed major league contracts Thursday.
Helm, a former Laguna Hills High School pitcher, signed with the Angels and will report next week to the team’s rookie camp at Mesa, Ariz. Peters, a senior first baseman, signed with the Dodgers and will report to their rookie team at Vero Beach, Fla.
Helm, a junior, was 6-5 with a 4.17 earned-run average and 102 strikeouts for Pepperdine University this season. He compiled a 10-7 record in two seasons at Pepperdine after transferring from the University of Arizona, where he pitched as a freshman.
Helm graduated from Laguna Hills in 1986. He had 17 victories in two seasons and holds school single-season records for strikeouts (124), shutouts (six) and earned-run average (0.66), all set in his senior year.
Helm was selected in the 15th round of the amateur baseball draft by the Angels. He will report to the Class-A Bend Bucks in Bend, Ore., after rookie camp.
Peters hit .341 this season for Fullerton, where he played for two seasons. Peters also played at Orange Coast College.
