Gardening : Weekend Checklist for Dedicated Diggers and Planters

For dedicated gardeners, here are suggestions from the California Assn. of Nurserymen:

Be sure to feed your annuals every two or three weeks to prolong and increase their blooming power.

For garden fragrance, try gardenias, star jasmine, lilacs or night-blooming jasmine.

Divide iris plants this month. Keep the new divisions well watered.

If there’s not enough rainfall, water your lawn and garden deeply in the mornings when needed and use a generous layer of mulch.

Remove crusted salts from empty clay pots by soaking the pot in water a few days. Start with hot water and renew the hot bath several times, then scrub off the white buildup with steel wool and dish detergent.
