General Telephone Co. of California is replacing Marina del Rey’s antiquated red call box fire alarm and emergency telephone system with public telephones.
Harbor Master Joe Manusia said in a prepared statement that the red call boxes were installed for emergency reporting purposes shortly after the marina opened in 1965. He said the system has become difficult to maintain because of the increasing difficulty in obtaining parts.
In addition, the 911 emergency system is available on public telephones, eliminating the need for most of the old call boxes, Manusia said.
GTE is replacing 46 call boxes near the sea walls with public telephones. An additional 16 telephones will be installed along Via Marina, Admiralty Way and Fiji Way.
The new telephones are expected to be in place by July 1.
