Five San Diego “Entrepreneurs of the Year”...

Five San Diego “Entrepreneurs of the Year” were recognized Monday at a luncheon sponsored by Inc. magazine and the Arthur Young accounting firm.

Winning the high technology category was John Downing, founder and president of Pacific Data Products, which makes products that enhance laser printer performance.

Ralph Rubio, founder of Rubio’s Deli-Mex restaurants, won the entrepreneurship category for founders of successful businesses who are members of a minority group. Robert Buie, president and co-founder of Buie Corp. home builders, was named top real estate investment and development entrepreneur.

Karla Hertzog, president of TOPS Total Personnel Service, a temporary help firm, won the category for successful businesses founded by women.

The general business entrepreneurship category was won by Anthony DiSio, president of Mail Boxes Etc., the nation’s largest franchiser of postal centers. Howard Birndorf was cited for his support of entrepreneurship.
