San Diego tourism in April was mixed in comparison with the same month in 1988, according to a survey by the San Diego Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Total visitors were up 5.1% to 2.9 million and spending by visitors was up 4.4% to $236 million. But airport arrivals dropped slightly and hotel room nights sold were up only 2.4%. Due to the approximately 3,000 new hotel rooms added to San Diego County’s inventory over the past 18 months, vacancy rates at area hotels dropped to 68.1% in April from 71.9% in April 1988.

Attendance at Sea World was up 4.2% while San Diego Zoo visits were off by 17.4%. Border crossings at San Ysidro and Otay Mesa checkpoints were up 18.8%.
