Compton : Newly Elected Officials to Sponsor Inaugural Party

Compton’s newly elected city officials will hold a free inaugural celebration July 1 which all residents may attend.

Activities will begin with a swearing-in ceremony at 11 a.m. in the Civic Center plaza in back of City Hall. A reception in the nearby amphitheater will follow.

In the evening, between 6 and 10, there will be dancing in the piazza at the Compton Auto Plaza, which is on Alameda Street near the Artesia (91) Freeway. The dance, which is being billed as a dressy affair, will have refreshments and a no-host bar. Officials said that they, not the city, will pay for all inaugural activities.

Two new council members, Bernice Woods and Patricia Moore, will take the oath of office that day, although Moore is already sitting on the City Council. She was appointed to fill the unexpired term of Floyd James, who resigned his council post early in order to wage a write-in campaign during the June 6 runoff.

Walter R. Tucker, who was elected to a third term as mayor, will also take the oath of office, along with other reelected city officials including Charles Davis, city clerk; Wesley Sanders Jr., treasurer, and Wesley Fenderson Jr., city attorney.
