Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir, who has been denounced by ultra-nationalist Jewish settlers, urged Israelis not to battle among themselves over how to end the Palestinian uprising. Shamir is under growing pressure to use harsher measures to quell the unrest. Shamir said on Israel Radio that disagreements over government policies must not degenerate into domestic strife. “I would suggest to everyone to lower the profile of our internal debates, because . . . you can slide into irresponsible actions.” Meanwhile, in the West Bank city of Nablus, assailants killed taxi driver Hassan Sharoub, a 47-year-old Palestinian who was suspected of cooperating with Israel, radio reports said.
