Sen. Lloyd Bentsen (D-Tex.) has rejoined three private clubs, at least two of which have no black members, from which he resigned when he was made the Democratic vice presidential candidate, a spokesman said today.

The clubs are the River Oaks Country Club in Houston, the Ramada Club of Houston and the Middleburg Tennis Club in Middleburg, Va.

Bentsen resigned from the three clubs last August. “He has been urged to rejoin by old friends,” the spokesman said. “It was a personal decision, and I wouldn’t expect him to say anything about it.”

Although none of the clubs have restrictions against blacks, the Middleburg Tennis Club and the River Oaks Country Club have no blacks. The manager at the Ramada Club declined to say whether it has black members.
