West Covina Boy, 6, Pulls His Drowning Mother to Safety With a Pool Skimmer

A 6-year-old boy fished his drowning mother out of their swimming pool in West Covina on Friday with the help of a long-handled pool skimmer, saving her life, police said.

Irene Montano’s son Jorge helped to pull his mother to safety after she grabbed onto the 8-foot pole he extended to her as she flailed about in the pool.

The boy then summoned help at his mother’s instruction, telling an emergency operator, “Somebody is pulling my mommy into the pool!”

When police arrived, they found the mother drenched and “visibly shaken” but safe, said West Covina Police Cpl. Derrell Griffith, who has recommended the boy for a commendation. Montano, who does not swim, was cleaning the pool when she fell in, police said.

“This kid had the presence of mind to do what he needed to do,” said Griffith.
