The World : Sakharov Visits Norway

Fourteen years after he won the Nobel Peace Prize but was not allowed to go abroad to accept it, Soviet human rights activist Andrei D. Sakharov traveled to Norway. “Better late than never,” Sakharov, who is on a tour of Western Europe, told reporters upon his arrival at Oslo’s airport. “I should have been here in 1975, but I was delayed by a few years.” Soviet authorities denied him permission then to travel to Oslo to receive the peace prize, and his wife, Yelena Bonner, accepted it on his behalf. Sakharov, 68, is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland during his six-day visit.
