An 11-year-old San Juan Capistrano boy flying a single-engine plane around the world arrived in Moscow today after collecting signatures of nearly 1,000 Soviet children to present to President Bush.

Tony Aliengena landed his blue-and-white Cessna 210 at Sheremetyevo airport after a two-hour flight from Leningrad, the first Soviet stop on his attempt to become the youngest person to pilot a plane around the globe.

A contingent of Young Pioneers, a Communist youth group, welcomed him with the traditional Russian offering of bread and salt.

“It wasn’t a difficult flight,” he said. “It’s just like flying anywhere.”

The youth, who has about 1,000 hours of flying time, is to spend five days touring Moscow. Among his stops will be Red Square, where West German teen-ager Mathias Rust gained worldwide fame by landing a single-engine Cessna in May, 1987, after evading Soviet air defenses.

The young pilot brought a friendship scroll signed by 250,000 American children that he hopes to present to President Mikhail S. Gorbachev.

However, it is not certain the Soviet leader will have time to meet the boy before he takes off Friday on a hopscotch journey across the Soviet Union and then on to Alaska.

“I am not sure if I will get to meet him, but I sure want to,” Tony said.

Bush has already agreed to meet him at the end of his planned 47-day journey, to accept a friendship scroll signed by Soviet youth. On Sunday night, the scroll was signed by 987 children in downtown Leningrad, where the pilot touched down Friday and spent the weekend.

Tony began his flight June 5 from California. It should take him 19,000 miles around the world in short hops averaging three hours each.

In the Soviet Union, he is accompanied by a Soviet navigator because air controllers on many domestic routes do not speak English, as required on international routes.
