Most urban shops, private businesses, schools and colleges across northern India’s Punjab state closed to protest the killing of 24 Hindus by suspected Sikh extremists. In some towns, private buses and taxis joined the strike in anger at the killing Sunday of members of the right-wing Hindu Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangha in a public park at Moga, a town 100 miles west of the Punjab capital of Chandigarh. It was the worst incident in several months in the militants’ long struggle for an independent Sikh homeland and pushed this year’s death toll to 950.
