Glendora : Parents May Go to School
Parents of students suspended from class may soon end up in school with their children as part of the school board’s effort to comply with state law.
The school board will vote July 10 on a policy that would allow teachers to ask parents or guardians to attend class with their children after students have been suspended. The policy was presented to the board Monday.
A child can be suspended for obscene acts, profanity, vulgarity or disruptive behavior, said Gary Rapkin, the board’s director of personnel services.
“This is to bring parents and children closer together to solve these types of actions, to involve them more in the disciplinary process,” Rapkin said.
A California law requires all the state’s school districts to adopt such policies by September. The law requires employers to let parents off work without docking their pay or demoting them. But the school attendance is voluntary.
“That is where the bill really loses its teeth,” Rapkin said. “In the end, we can’t really make them go.”
