A special French court in Lyon convicted three leaders of the left-wing terrorist group Direct Action and sentenced them to life in prison on charges that included the murder of a civilian guard and two policemen. The seven-judge court also convicted 14 other defendants and gave them prison sentences ranging from 10 months to seven years. The Lyon-based group’s ideological leader, Andre Olivier, 46, and his deputy, Maxime Frerot, 33, the group’s explosives expert, must serve at least 18 years of their sentences. The third principal, Emile Ballandras, 40, must serve at least 16 years of his life sentence, the court ruled.
