County Supervisors’ Vote on AIDS Anti-Bias Measure
Your excellent editorials supporting the passage of the AIDS anti-discrimination ordinance unfortunately were not heeded by three members of the Orange County Board of Supervisors. Their capacity for logic and compassion is severely debilitated by political expediency.
Supervisor Gaddi H. Vasquez voted against the ordinance but stated that he had “tasted discrimination” and that it is a bitter taste. Perhaps the privileges given to the favorite Hispanic son of the Republican Party who was handed a public office have dulled his memory of it.
He should try walking a mile in the shoes of a gay man or any other person with AIDS to remember just how bitter it can be. Supervisors Harriett M. Wieder and Thomas F. Riley are to be commended for following their consciences and the recommendations of public health officials. And so is The Times.
