Kabul Said to OK Journalist’s Release

From Associated Press

President Najibullah has agreed to release an American photographer captured June 8 while traveling with Muslim guerrillas, a senior PLO official said Saturday.

The Afghan president gave the assurance that Tony O’Brien, 43, a native of Santa Fe, N.M., would be freed, possibly this week, in response to a personal appeal by Palestine Liberation Organization Chairman Yasser Arafat, said Arafat’s special ambassador, Abu Khaled.

“He told me that there will be no trial and that O’Brien will be released shortly,” Khaled told reporters.
