Appoint Environmentalists, Oil Firms Asked: State Controller Gray Davis, in a letter written with New York City Comptroller Harrison J. Goldin, called on six major oil companies to appoint an environmentalist to their boards as Exxon Corp. did after the Valdez oil spill. The two officials also recommended that the boards appoint committees to monitor environmental, worker health and safety policies. Davis wrote as trustee of two state pension plans that hold 11.2 million shares of stock in the six companies; Goldin represented several New York City funds holding more than 2.3 million shares. The six companies were Amerada Hess, Amoco Corp., Ashland Oil, Kerr-McGee Corp., Pennzoil Co. and Tenneco.
