North Sea Oil Workers Strike: Workers on a North Sea oil platform went on strike to protest safety measures nearly a year after a blaze killed 167 men on the Piper Alpha platform. About 65 of the 161 men aboard the Texaco Tartan platform, not far from where Piper Alpha once stood, are striking, a Texaco spokesman said. Non-union workers are operating the platform. Thousands more offshore workers on all 135 North Sea platforms are expected to stop work Thursday, the anniversary of the Piper Alpha explosion.
