Japan, Switzerland and the United States retained their first, second and third rankings in the World Economic Forum’s ninth annual business “competitiveness” report released today.

A nonprofit organization promoting international business contacts, the WEF bases ratings on factors like economic dynamism, efficiency, innovative policies, market orientation and lack of state interference.

“The United States, in spite of slightly decreasing business confidence, maintains a strong third position (with) the sheer size of its market being a major advantage,” it said.

“This year’s remarkable performer is Canada, moving up from sixth position in 1987 to fourth this year, ahead of West Germany which now ranks fifth,” the WEF report said.
