The World : Colombia Governor Slain

The governor of the Colombian state that is home to the notorious Medellin drug cartel was killed when a car bomb exploded while he was on his way to deliver a speech condemning political violence. Three bodyguards and at least two bystanders also were killed. Gov. Antonio Roldan Betancur, 43, of Antioquia, one of the most violent states in Colombia, died when the booby-trapped vehicle exploded as his car passed. The bomb, set off by a remote control device found nearby, hurled the governor’s car about 10 yards and damaged at least 12 nearby homes and five other cars. A surgeon, Roldan had been governor of Antioquia since last August.
