Former President Salvador Jorge Blanco, jailed on corruption charges, was released on $57,000 bail Wednesday to accompany his injured wife to the United States for treatment, judicial sources said.

They said Jorge Blanco left immediately for Miami aboard an air ambulance with his wife, Asela Mera de Jorge. Family doctors said she was in serious condition after falling down a staircase while visiting her husband in prison Sunday.

Jorge Blanco, who was president from 1982 to 1986, was sentenced last November to 20 years in prison and fined $12 million for corruption.
