The United Arab Emirates has deported 1,000 people found to have the AIDS virus since it launched a campaign to halt the disease in 1985, a health official said in Abu Dhabi. “Out of 1 million people tested for AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome), one per 1,000 were found positive,” health assistant undersecretary Abdul Rahim Jaafar said. The UAE requires new residents to take an AIDS test before they are allowed to stay. Over two-thirds of the population of 1.6 million are foreign. UAE officials have said that 22 people died of AIDS in 1987.
