Mahn Win Maung; Ex-President of Burma
Mahn Win Maung, 73, the last president of a democratically elected Burmese government. A graduate of Rangoon University who served in various ministries including mines, transport and communications after 1947, Mahn Win Maung was appointed president of Prime Minister U Nu’s government in March, 1957. He was imprisoned for five years after the military coup of Gen. Ne Win in 1962 that ousted U Nu, and he spent his later years in retirement. Mahn Win Maung was a member of the Karen ethnic minority. In Rangoon on Tuesday after what was described as a long illness.
